Ahhhh….finally! We found an area of Orange County that doesn’t have that accursed 28-day maximum stay limit….and it’s in the area where my new job is! Guess I should have checked there first, but hey….any good news is most welcome right about now. We’ll save a TON on gas, not to mention wear and tear on the ol’ battle van. Perhaps we’ll still show those nay-sayers yet that yes, a Denverite CAN make it in Orange County Cali!
Still no steady net access, but that’s a secondary thing right about now….first comes the place, THEN we can worry about other things….gotta observe those priorities, ya know. I made the rounds last night, touching base with my buds in Denver and Montana – most of which were shocked to hear from me (hey, my rep STILL works!), and it was great to talk with them again. I MISS YOU GUYS AND GALS!
No word on the “goth scene” here as of yet, but all in good time, I guess. Perhaps closer to downtown LA or something…at least there is a gothic coffee shop in San Diego called “Lestat’s” that I need to check out with Ray-Ray sometime. Granted, motel life isn’t as good as apartment life, but it’s a close second! Keep the faith!
Yesterday was a really kewl day since we went to Santa Monica pier and went to wiggle our toes in the water. I wrote Mari Iijima’s message from her site in the sand, “May Peace Prevail On Earth”, so perhaps people will see it and pass along the message….one can hope anyways.
Kids are still being…kids (go figure), so no big surprises on that front. Now if we can just get a decent apartment – or at least a cheaper motel room, then we’ll be all good! Perhaps next weekend we’ll go to a different beach and see some more of the coastline. I’ve still been getting cool E-mails from my friends, so that’s always a welcome find! I love replying to messages from my close friends from Denver…kinda makes it feel like they’re close by even though they are miles away.
Things have been a whirlwind of activity since our arrival in sunny California, but at least I have a job, which is still running a record for me (4 days after arrival)! I guess I can take a small bow for that one. After we get a regular apartment, then I’ll really be jumping for joy! The team I’m on with at B of A (the bank job) I guess has some really cool track record since the last two days we’ve been getting free lunch brought up to us. One day was stuff from California Pizza Kitchen, and then yesterday it was a Chinese lunch! Well, so much for shedding weight any time soon. LOL
Sometime I hope to make it up to Little Tokyo, so I can check and see if they have any Mari Iijima CD’s that I’m missing, so that way I can complete my collection (not that there is much missing…thanks Mochi & Mari!). I’ll also be checking into opportunities with a cable service provider out here for possible jobs, since I do have training in that area of expertise, perhaps I’ll be a suitable catch! Hey…it’s always worth a shot, right?
I must say….this first week ended with a bang! I GOT A JOB! Woo-hoo! I got an assignment through Talent Tree with one of the major banks out here, and I started at just under $12/hour, which is pretty darn good! I met one of the guys there who I would swear is a twin for Ray Higgins! This guy sounds like him and LOOKS a lot like him! Way spooky, but cool! He’s cool like Ray too. I made some friends there already, so I guess I’m off to a pretty good start!
I’ve been trying to make the rounds in calling all my friends, so if you haven’t heard from me, don’t worry….I’m working on it! To those of you I haven’t heard from, I’m thinking about you all, and givin’ ya lots of big hugs. The van made it down just fine – didn’t die like the Tempo did (and the Tempo wasn’t hauling anything), and is still running strong. The kids are still a trial most days, but eventually we’ll get the schooling thing all worked out and then once we get an apartment, it’ll be all good again.
The commute is OK, and I’ve found a highway route as well as a way via city streets…..I think the highway route leaves much to be desired coming home though. We got a good dose of rain starting last night, which is still spitting today. The other day we went to San Diego (found out is was 92 miles one-way!), and then saw the ocean again. Brie got to see the seals up on one of the beaches and get a bit of sea-spray from the waves as well, which made her happy.
We found a goth place called “Torrid”, which appears to be the “plus-size” version of “Hot Topic” – go figure. I know the more I explore, the more I’ll see and do….so we’ll see what happens next!
Stay tuned for more updates from sunny California!
Sorry for the lack of updates over the past few days, but yes, we are here! We found a motel in Garden Grove to stay at for a while, and got all the unemployment stuff changed around *whew*…so that’s all done. Now it’s just a race against the clock to get jobs and an apartment set up, so we’ll see what happens next. I had an appointment yesterday with one staffing company, and I have two interviews tomorrow – hopefully at least ONE will pan out. Sorry I don’t have a phone number as of yet, but I miss all my friends in Denver (of course!), and will try to keep in as much contact as I can!
Keep the faith!
