I think this age of “being PC” has really gotten too far.
No, really….I do. I think this is something has just been going on since the late 90’s, because I really don’t remember it being this way before then. It all comes down to the question of “what is offensive?”. That’s about it. I don’t think there is a soul among us on this plane of existence that hasn’t offended someone, somewhere, sometime. It happens, and it’s human nature to err once in a while. I mean heck….people offend me from time to time, but most of the time I just brush it off as like I said…it happens.
It does seem that people who are REALLY concerned about “being PC” are those that are the most intolerant of people. Think about it. They’re so concerned about not offending anyone, that they end up annoying the holy crap out of more people than before they started worrying about it. We’re so wrapped up in walking on eggshells, that we’ve forgotten what it is to relax. The worst ones are those that say “Oh you shouldn’t say this about that race, that type, that gender – whatever”, but they feel free to be discriminative about others at will.
Here is one that just gobsmacked me recently. I remember going to elementary schools on Halloween in my little costume, and we paraded around the school getting candy, doing haunted houses, and having a great time. Remember those? NOW, they are BANNED from wearing costumes to school on Halloween? Why? They say “Because it’s not fair to those who can’t afford costumes”. I had to sit back and think about this one. I realize that people have lost their drive in many directions, but to not be able to think up a costume idea for your child that’s not pre-packaged? Oh yeah…the kids want all those “character” costumes, don’t they? Ok then….if you don’t have the MONEY for that, you CREATE what you can with what you have. The idea of Halloween in America is for kids to go out and have a good time, perhaps be a little creative, and get a crapload of sweets that dentists will be cursing about for the next year – right?
I’m sorry, but I just don’t get that. I’ve run into this situation myself with my sometimes “otherworldly appearance” – I’ve been kicked out of places many times, lost friends, and had disparaging remarks made, so yes….I have been there. But…there are those who have not done anything, but are still discriminated against due to what they like to do with their lives. I can hear you now……here goes ShockQueen on another trumpet march again, right? You may be right, but hey….you chose to read this, so you are probably interested in reading what I have to say at least once *grin*. I was watching CNN today, and they were talking about Dog, the bounty hunter, apologizing for using “The N word”. Okay….he oopsed. We all probably did it at one time or another….but is it really something to plaster all over the news and get all worked up about it? Yep….it’s media sensationalism at its best folks.
and yes….I DO have African-American friends, thank you very much. I have Indian friends. I have Asian friends. I have Gay friends. I have friends from many walks of life, and I enjoy their company dearly because I choose not to get wrapped up in the “eggshell hype” that this society seems to be all muddled down in. Is there any reason why we cannot just sit down, take a breath, relax, and enjoy each other’s company without walking on eggshells? They are a bitch to vacuum up out of the carpet after all.
