The girl sat on the shore, sitting in the water with her feet playing in the sand – looking up at the trees and the clouds. She often wondered what it would be like to walk out there – among all of the other people. It would be true freedom, for not many would come to see her where she lived. Oh, the occasional stranger would come by, ask some questions, and sometimes even take a small gift with them when the left, but they never stayed very long.
In her home, she knew peace and serenity. She would enjoy beautiful things, such as seashells, fish, and little bits of coral, sprinkled with gems that she would find when she went exploring – sometimes a curious trinket that would be left in her backyard that she would put into her collection. She sometimes came to the shore to catch glimpses of another life – another world that she yearned to be a part of, yet knew somehow it would always be alien to her – something that could never be fully attained.
“Perhaps someday I’ll journey to this far-away land and experience what I can only see from the shore, and experience the life the people there live every day. Someday…….perhaps…..” and with that she walked back out in the water and skated along its surface until she came to her home. She knew…..if she ever left the water, she would surely sink into the land.
