When you get ready to head out that door today, try this one simple thing – leave your phone at home.
No, really……..just turn it off and leave it on the shelf before you head out the door. Can you do that?
It may be harder than you think…..harder than it used to be – before the internet/always connected age.
Did you do it? Was it harder than you thought? Did you even think about picking it back up, or did you leave it there? If you left it there, made it out the door, locked it, and then moved on – congratulations! You are more strong-willed than a majority of people these days. You left that parasite just sitting there on the shelf – pining for your attention.
No……..don’t even think about going back in after it. It’ll be fine all on its own. Remember…..at one time, we didn’t even HAVE these things attached to our hips and wrists, so it is possible to live without it.
The point I’m trying to make is that it’s not necessary to have this electronic dongle attached to your life every single day – it can be disconnected. Now granted, the internet/social media age has brought a lot of good in the world – it’s connected us in so many good, healthy ways, but the problem is that we do not do this in moderation. We take every opportunity to open up our device and just see if anyone tried to contact us.
The days I’ve forgotten my phone at home have been actually quite peaceful! It’s nice to just spend time with my wife, going out and seeing the world and anything new that’s in it, and not have to worry about that little flat box squawking at me to let me know someone out there is trying to let me know something.
After all………there WAS a time before such devices even entered our lives. Sadly, they seem to have taken them over for the most part, and then if you DO forget it at home, you have people yelling at you for being absent-minded enough to leave it behind. Oh yeah….there was an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation that dealt with that very addiction, called “The Game”.
Scary when you think about it……..isn’t it? Now shut off this computer, lock your tablet up, and go out and do something healthy for a change.
