One thing that you realize as you go through life is that some things make you feel better than others. Often times, it’s the simple pleasures that are the best. For some, it’s a favorite food, or a smell, a movie, a song – it’s pretty much different for everyone.
I have a list of things that make me feel better – which one I use depends on the day.
Talking with Family & Friends – I always enjoy this, and it always helps. Doing face-to-face conversations is the best for me, especially when going out for coffee, and I can ratchet-jaw for HOURS and HOURS. I’ve been known to greet the sun on many occasions. I have often said that I could even meet someone famous on the street and just yak with them like anyone else for hours without even touching on the stuff they are known for – not that it would ever happen mind you, but it’s something I contemplate from time to time.
Rainy / Foggy Days – To me, growing up in a small town, one of the things that I really enjoy is “fresh rain smell”, especially when it’s mixed with fresh cut grass. If you have grass allergies, this may not work for you, but for me, it’s one of the best smells around. I don’t think you can really bottle the smell, because it’s best when combined with a nice cool breeze – that’s pure magic right there.
Music – This is a far-reaching thing for me, and I have so many different artists that help on varying levels, depending on my mood. Most of the time, artists like Art of Noise, David Bowie, Lene Lovich, Mari Iijima, Nina Hagen, and scads of others help my mood. They also help me when I’m looking for a creative inspiration for something to make or draw.
Clothing/Fashion – This may seem a little shallow, but on the whole, I already have most of the types of clothing that makes me feel better, but every once in a while, I go shopping for something special. I don’t shop for high-end merchandise (mainly because I can’t afford it), but if there is something on sale, and I really like it, I may snag it.
Drawing – This ALWAYS helps. I draw what I feel, and I really should do this more often. I come up with some rather unique creations when I’m in odd moods, so maybe someday this will go together in a collection of images that I’ll share with the world. I’ve doodled for many years, and I have no plans of stopping any time soon.
Walking – Sometimes I just need to get out and clear my head. I don’t always have a specific destination in mind – sometimes I just wander around and just run into surprises along the way. I used to walk places to get something to eat or have coffee, but where I live now, there aren’t many places to do this at, so I have to save those for times when I can drive to an area, then park, then walk somewhere. I get it done somehow.
So yes…..there are things I can do that help me feel better – not all of which even cost money – just time well spent.
