For a long time, I’ve been a little shy about donating blood. It’s one of those things where they take your blood and then you feel a little woozy for some time afterwards while your body recovers. Granted, you’re helping to save a life and all, but the recovery thing just shied me away from the whole idea.
Then I heard about donating plasma instead of blood – it’s where they hook you up to a machine much like dialysis, take the blood out, separate the plasma, then put the rest back into you along with saline (I think) – takes a bit longer, but the recovery time is nil, plus you earn a little cash for your time.
Okay……so I’m a teeny bit selfish in this regard, but I figure it’s a win/win situation all the way around. The plasma goes towards a good cause and I get a little gas money out of the deal. Well, there are some caveats to the whole thing – especially if it doesn’t go well. I found out one of those results. I went in a few days ago, and they couldn’t get the blood flowing right from the get-go, and so they pushed in farther, and I thought something might have been wrong, but didn’t think too much about it at the time, as they just switched arms and finished out the session. The next day, I seemed a bit sore on that arm, so the following day, I had them go in the other side. They couldn’t get it going there, so they went back to my usual arm, and it wouldn’t even start, so I was done – with a blood loss – 2nd time in 2 months, so I get to take 2 months off.
Okay………no big deal. I’ve been down this road before. I thought nothing of it until a couple of days later.
I had a huge bruise showing up on my arm – and it was growing. What’s odd is that it’s on the other side of the arm – not close to the entry point. Wow……that must have gone worse than I thought! I guess it’s a good thing I’m taking 2 months off. It’ll take that long to recover from the huge purple blotch on my arm. Yuck.
I don’t get bruises all that often, except from an occasional bike ride accident, which hasn’t happened in a long time, but dang…….those hurt!
I’m not sure if I’ll be going back in September or not, but only time will tell. I’m hopeful I will, but you never know. We’ll see!
