The next battles have been brewing in recent years over a place of calm meditation and relief – the bathroom, also called the restroom.
When you use a restroom, one generally rests on a commode, does their duty, washes their hands, then goes on with their day. Such a simple function to a room, yet such a hot potato topic in today’s battles over gender equality.
One asks “Why are we fighting over this?”. Is it because the powder room/ladies’ room has more toilets or decorations? Is it because they think one is cleaner than the other? Is it the fear of the “creepy lurker” invading sacred territory?
Having worked maintenance jobs in my life, let me dispell one theory right now…..they BOTH get gross! Sorry ladies, but your dookies tend to miss the target just as much as the guys do, and guys don’t have to worry about where the sanitary napkins go.
Maybe it’s all psychological. Maybe ladies feel more……feminine going in a room with only other ladies in it? Guys don’t feel pretty sometimes either? Sorry……that should be “handsome”, huh? Yeah…..there’s another gender stereotype right there (files for future reference). This probably goes way back to where the “ladies’ room” was called the “powder room”, where they freshened up their makeup and/or hair before going out again. Males didn’t usually fuss with their hair or facial complexion before, so there was no such function in the “mens’ room”.
I doubt there will be any real resolution to this anytime soon, mainly because we are so polarized about “our restrooms”, but in the end, it’s just a place to rest, take a dump, and freshen up….that’s all it really is. Know what I would like? A restroom with more toilets and a bit brighter lights around the mirror in case I want to freshen up in style as well! Oh…..and maybe a nice floral arrangement for some color.
