I’ve been playing games for a very long time. Yes…….I remember when Pong was an arcade game – that’s how long it’s been. One of my main reasons to play games is to relax and escape into some make-believe world where I can live out adventures that would otherwise not exist in the real world (although some games are just a little too real to life, if you know what I mean).
One of the biggest annoyances I have when it comes to videogames is when you try to enjoy a game, and then someone else butts into your game and then ruins the experience. Remember playing the original Mortal Kombat, kicking the computer’s butt, and then some butt-brain comes up, sticks a quarter in to challenge you, beats you, and kicks you off the machine? Yeah……..people like that just piss me off. Leave me alone to pit my skills against the pre-programmed enemies. I don’t need you boosting your ego at my expense.
Ever play one of those online multiplayer games and someone blows you away, and then camps over your corpse, continuing to blow you away every time you re-spawn? Yeah……..those people piss me off too.
I just don’t need that type of aggravation – really! I play games to unwind, escape, and take out some frustrations from daily life in a safe manner that doesn’t unduly affect anything out in the real world.
World of Warcraft? No thanks! Not only is that built around multiplayer, but you have to pay a monthly subscription fee to continue playing! To me, that is just not worth it. I guess to some, they enjoy that sense of community – that sense of belonging to some group that goes after a huge beast just to share some massive amount of loot that comes along in the end – providing some butthead doesn’t come in and swipe up all the loot and kill everyone else off, that is.
One of the biggest games to come out last year for the PS4 – Destiny – was supposed to be a real blockbuster, mind-blowing, life-changing game that would rock your world. I guess it does……..if you like multiplayer. The single-player campaign is really short and is not all that interesting. To me…….just not worth staying up for the opening day launch and shelling out the $60 to play it. Sorry guys……..I had way more fun playing Watch Dogs, along with the Bad Blood DLC add-on – even though others were dissing it because it wasn’t good enough for their standards.
I guess peoples’ standards differ based on what you expect out of a game.
Sometimes I listen to reviews, and other times I tend not to listen to anyone at all. Sometimes I am pleasantly surprised, like when I picked up inFamous back in 2011 during the PSN hack when they gave away two free games as part of their “I’m sorry” promotion. I had no idea what the game was about, but it looked dark, gritty, and could be fun.
Oh yeah……..me and Cole McGrath had a grand time around Empire City.
I played every single game of that franchise – even though it bugged me when they changed the voice and character model for the 2nd game. The PS4 titles were awesome as well…….and this started out as s game I knew nothing about! I’m left hoping there is another inFamous title in our futures to come!
The only games I like playing with others are the party games and some race titles – mainly those from Nintendo. I enjoy the Mario Party games, some of the Mario Kart series, and also Wii U Party is a lot of fun. I play those with my family, and it’s a sort of bonding time for all of us, and allows us to share something together that we all enjoy – even if our youngest kicks our butts at the kart races most of the time.
One of the other surprising games was Grand Theft Auto V. I tried San Andreas, and was not impressed, but GTA V was a real surprise at how much fun it was. This game does feature an online mode, but sadly, I wasn’t too much into that whole experience. I guess if you know a bunch of people that you enjoy playing with, then have at it – I just didn’t get that much out of the whole multiplayer thing.
So maybe I’m a loner when it comes to playing games. Maybe I’m selfish and want to keep my experiences all to myself. That’s how I play. It may not be how you play, but that is your choice. For me……..this is my time to escape into another world – another place – another time. Leave a message at the beep and I’ll get back to you, but this trip is all me.
