There is a reason why I titled today’s posting the way I did. Anyone who reads a newspaper, watches the news, or reads articles online should see the writing on the wall as to why this is.
We’re so easily offended by just about anything these days – AND in the same vein, we are doing such stupid stuff because other people in our country are offended by stuff that has been around for a very long time!
I think our country has pretty much ripped its own spinal cord out and tossed it out the window to replace it with a very limp noodle. One of the biggest things that I see in the news – and how much of it is actually true, you take with your own grain of salt, but it seems to be the big, in-vogue thing going around…….is this whole cow-towing to demands from Muslims about stuff that has been in our culture for a long time because it offends them. Ummm….wasn’t this the same section of people who blew up two very tall buildings in New York City 14 years ago, as well as part of the Pentagon? Now we are seeing lawsuits all over the country to remove (x) and remove (y), because it offends (xyz) group!
Really? Are we going to keep going down this road? Should we perhaps go to their countries and demand they remove this or that because it offends our sensibilities? Wanna know how fast they would laugh us out of their country? Yet, it seems that we are actually giving in to these groups in our country! I just don’t get that at all. We have had flags, the pledge of allegiance, symbols of religious belief……..all of these things have been commonplace in our country for a very long time, and now because of the new vogue initiative of removing something just because someone whines and complains that it offends them……..I’m sorry, but you have to draw the line in the sand somewhere (no pun intended).
Have we become too much of a melting pot to where our country is starting to lose its identity? Are we becoming the biggest victims of identity theft when it comes to how our country was founded and grown? Can you see how this is starting to make our country one big, hot mess? Our education isn’t getting any better either. Someday, I plan on obtaining a copy of a new Social Studies book, and then compare it to one from when I was in school, and just see how much of it has changed over the years – and how much of it is left out. Do we even include all of our history anymore, or do we take out sections out of fear that it might offend someone? It’s the history of the USA – the complete history, not just the parts you think are OK. We went through tough times. We had to learn to grow together as a nation, and not all of it was pretty. If you take out the parts that seem to be tough to digest, then you may as well get on a diet of soft food, because you’ll never have the stomach to learn the whole history of how things used to be.
Well, here is what I know…………….
I am proud to be an American.
I am proud of my German heritage.
I am proud of my own race, and I believe all are equal and think no one is better than the other.
If I want to, I am free to display the American flag, and am not going to take it down just because someone says it offends them (did you see the recent story about the student who says they couldn’t display their flag in the back of their truck?).
People are individuals, despite any label society has placed on them. I think labels are the most destructive thing we have ever come up with. It divides people among race, ethnicity, gender, social status, sexual orientation/identity, ability, and just about anything people can dream up. Labels are just out there for someone to say (that label) type of person is less of a person than they are, which is just not true, and no reason to cry “I’m offended by (that label)!” over.
Some years ago, one of my best friends and I went to see “South Park: The Movie”, and he said to me one of the funniest things I’ve heard in some time. He said “You know……..I’m offended that I WASN’T offended.”
People are now in the groove that they can actually take people to court and sue them because someone did something that offended them. Anyone wanna count how many court cases are on the docket for this one? Probably too many to count, and I’m sure judges are looking at these and shaking their heads over it, asking “Why is this case on my desk?” Being offended is big business! Hey….if you can make money at it, then you may as well go out and go for the gusto as much as possible, right?
Wait………that’s not what the courts are for, yet it seems to be the convenient place to take such gripes.
In parting, I’ll mention Matthew 7:3-5 where it talks about not taking the speck out of your brother’s eye while there is a plank in your own eye. Perhaps we could learn from this passage. And yes……..I am working on reading the ENTIRE Bible. I don’t cherry-pick around anymore. That just gets people into trouble. Heck…somehow getting a whole plank in your own eye……..that would just be painful, so I’m going to stay away from looking for toothpicks.
