When it comes to games I like to play, I tend to gravitate towards titles that have one very simple element to them that not every game has…………being able to see your character.
Call me old-school, but most games that I grew up with actually had you being able to see your character running around, driving around, shooting around the screen, and you knew exactly where you were. Over time, the point of view seemed to shift more towards first-person perspective – being in the game, as i were. In some games, I agree – these games, like Virtua Racing, Daytona USA, and some others, the view looks pretty bad ass – being in the driver’s seat, seeing things like you are right there. When it comes to just about every single game having this view, it sometimes wears down a bit. When you are running through a corridor somewhere, most games look like you are floating through the level – like the person got lopped off at the waist, and then surgically attached to a hover-board or something.
I think if I had to play games like Watch Dogs or inFamous in first-person POV, I don’t think it would have been quite as much fun………..to me, anyway. Now, granted, there are those of you who are saying I’m out of my mind – first-person is the way to be! If you are in that crowd, and enjoy it, then by all means, buy as many of those as you like – I’m just saying that there are times that I think it lessens the experience. There are some that I will still play though – such as Wolfenstein: The New Order and Dishonored (which I just started) – they seem just fine. They made a first-person mode for GTA V, but I never used it – why? Because I like being able to see my character beating the crap out of someone. I can use first-person for my sniping missions – those work great! In fact, I rather enjoy most games that have this mechanic built into them (yes, Black for the Xbox – I’m looking at you).
Can you imagine playing Space Invaders in first-person mode? I didn’t think so either.
Okay….that was a bit extreme, but maybe that’s just a play mechanic that tends to make me swing and swoon for one particular game over another. Will that change over time? For now, I’m not sure. Only time will tell.
