I’ve found one of the biggest money holes that anyone that loves video games can ever get caught up into – Skylanders.
I have covered this on various postings before, but here is my latest take on the whole franchise – only buy the figures if you truly love and enjoy the series. There is a reason why I say this – the figures do not hold their value unless it is a rare variant!
I have seen listings all over the internet for figures as low as less than a dollar for the large figures! The problem is…….the market as a whole has been over-saturated with these figures, and as such, has produced a glut to the point where no one on a secondary market would want to touch them. Oh wait………maybe that’s how Activision and Toys For Bob wanted it. You get figures that are cool that everyone wants, and then you get the rest that are just not as popular, yet everyone has. Thing is…….the hype engine for this game pretty much writes itself, goading you to get as many characters as you can for as big of an army as you can. Pretty soon, you have over 200 characters…..and the new fifth game is due to come out soon!
I plan on making a YouTube video that goes into detail on just how many characters you absolutely need in order to unlock everything in all 4 games without busting your wallet too much – even though your kids will cry up a storm if you didn’t get every single character in every single wave that gets released. If your store doesn’t have it, you’ll end up driving all over the “Back 40” looking for it, or risk the wrath of the quivering lip and the wail-fest that is sure to ensue. Thanks to the practices of short-supplying and exclusives, you are very unlikely to ever get every single character without taking out a second mortgage on your home.
Now that the fifth game is on the horizon, I am abstaining from going off that cliff. I do not need to get into another round of furious searching and scavenging just to get plastic figures.
