Well, this week has hit a sour note with some bad news in my watching world. I have been going through all eight seasons of Doctor Who, and have enjoyed the ride thoroughly! From Eccleston, to Tennant, to Smith, and now to Capaldi – they have all been wonderful companions on my TV screen or phone.
Now I have found out that the streaming services I pay monthly fees to – Netflix and Hulu, have made the choice to disown the timelord and remove him from their domains (but Netflix in the UK is keeping it – how nice………)! This has almost happened on a couple of other occasions, but the BBC and the streaming services have come to terms and renewed their friendship.
This year……..sadly………seems not to be the case. The TARDIS is departing their servers – it seems, forever. One wonders why on earth this would be the case. Was it due to cost? Was it due to viewership? (nah…….could NOT be that) What was the driving force behind this horrible decision to remove such a beloved show?
Sadly, we may never know the true reasons behind these motivations or machinations, depending on how you view these events, but suffice it to say, this makes for some sad times, as I was really enjoying this ride, and had planned on enjoying it again, but now I’ll have to pursue other methods of enjoying them. Oh sure, I could purchase them on DVD or Amazon instant video, but they were already on a service I enjoyed and knew where they could be found! Heck, I even upgraded my Hulu membership to take out the commercials, just so I could enjoy my shows uninterrupted when I found out The Doctor was leaving Netflix, but perhaps I made this jump too soon?
Well, I still enjoy CSI on Hulu (the original one – the best), but that is a conversation for another day.
It was probably some business decision, as most things are, and not some malicious intention of The Master, as some Whovians may suspect. Regardless of the decision, a lot of people are going to be without seeing the adventures of The Doctor and his many companions thanks to these moves.
So the question is…….what to do now. Do we shop on Amazon video or iTunes? Do we go back and gobble up DVD’s? What do we do? Yes……I know I hear some “arrrrrrs” there in the background. We know what you’re up to. Maybe we’ll get an 11th-hour reprieve and get our Doctor back? Somehow, the outlook is looking pretty grim, and just at a point where I was really getting back into Doctor Who again after all these years.
I grew up during the Jon Pertwee / Tom Baker / Peter Davison era, so got to see some of the truly great episodes of those times. I also saw the 1996 movie with Paul McGann (he really needed a season or two of his own, but sadly, we just got one movie and one web episode). It was fan-TAST-ic to see Christopher Eccleston picking up the reins when the new series flew into our living rooms, although sadly, he was only in it for one season. David Tennant and Matt Smith were no slouches either, and Peter……..oh yeah…..he’s getting pretty darn good!
I guess I’ll be binge-watching this weekend up to the point where they rip the plug out of the wall……….and then……….the Silence takes over.
