There are many times that I have plenty of patience – it’s a skill I’ve cultivated over the years I have been on this tiny blue marble hurtling through space. Now…..granted, I have not always been patient – in fact, there are those who know me that can attest to just how short-tempered I can be from time to time.
It happens……….we’re all human. We’re not perfect. The last perfect person got nailed to a cross about two millennia ago, and that record has never been tied since, and I doubt it will any time soon. It’s the way we are. Somehow, I think people out there are embracing this and using it to some extreme degree with no sense of remorse or regret.
You see it all the time – the person in the checkout yelling at the cashier. The road rage in the parking lot when someone is trying to get a nice, close parking spot – only to have it stolen from them by some yuppie in a Mini Cooper. The guy who zooms in front of you as you are crossing the crosswalk (clearly marked to boot). They’re all out there – in all shapes and sizes. It’s almost like it’s a competition just to see how much of a nincompoop they can be.
When I was growing up, some of the things we were taught were very simple – say “please” and “thank you”. Hold open the door for someone going into the same place you’re going into when they’re unable to themselves. Smile once in a while for no reason at all. Take personal responsibility for your own actions (or lack thereof). Waiting your turn in line and giving the person in front of you their personal space………..just very, very basic things that people somehow seem to fail at with almost unswerving regularity!
It would be nice to see more people smile, so when I’m out and about, if I make eye contact with someone, I try to give that smile a good effort, just to see if it brightens their day just a little bit. It doesn’t always work, but when I get a smile back, it makes my day a little bit brighter too.
I don’t know why more people aren’t happier. Maybe it’s their own personal choices in life. Maybe it’s circumstances beyond their control. Maybe they just woke up on the wrong side of the planet. It’s not always easy to know, and I’m not one to ask many questions from strangers, so I just wonder as I go about my day.
At least there is one great thing about being able to smile……………
