I just don’t get why the biggest story in the news this week is about some football player who refused to stand up for the National Anthem. We live in the greatest country in the world, where we have people who put their lives on the line selflessly every single day to ensure that we can live free lives, and make free choices, yet this one guy seemed to stir up the pot of controversy the likes of which are not usually seen for something like this.
I get that we have patriotic spirit, and that’s not a bad thing, but if someone’s beliefs differ from your own, then who are we to be the dictators saying “you have to stand at attention like everyone else or ELSE!”? Yes, he may be seen as unpatriotic or a bit of a wafflehead at what he did, but……..that was his freedom of choice. I think we have a lot bigger issues in the world to worry about than an overpaid sports figure just because he chose not to stand up for the flag.
I can respect that people have various beliefs, faiths, and philosophies in their lives – that’s all good and well, but when those encroach on other people’s lives, there is a line that seems to get crossed at that time. It is possible for people who have differences of opinion to be able to get along together, but we just choose not to. If you ask me my opinion about something that I don’t agree with, I’m going to tell you what it is, but I’m not going to expect you to change overnight as a result of it.
For my $.02, if I’m in one of those rare occurrences where I find myself at a sporting event (and that never happens unless it’s free or someone else is paying for it), if they stand for the National Anthem to salute the flag, of course I will, because I still believe this country is the greatest in the world, even though it seems like the people at the helm appear to be running the ship into the proverbial iceberg. Just my opinion………….
