Recently, I encountered something I’ve not really been affected by, and while many would say I shouldn’t be ruffled by it, it does bug me to a degree just because to me……….it is wrong.
I’m talking about people having equal rights to being able to drive in a legal manner without being impeded by people who choose to flagrantly disregard the law. I know it’s opening up a huge can of worms, because people on both sides of this issue will probably never agree. This is my opinion, and will most likely differ from yours (well………unless you’re as ruffled as I got over it).
It’s about bikers and this “pack mentality” as they call it when doing fun runs……….poker runs……bingo runs……whatever type of “run” you want to call it, it’s about blocking traffic so they can let the rest of their entourage through. It’s where you stop at a traffic light, and you then see a group of bikers crossing through the intersection, BUT……….when their light is about to turn red, some of their members stop in the middle of traffic lanes, blocking people from proceeding when their light is GREEN, just to let the rest of their buddies drive on in their “pack”.
If you try calling them out on this, they will retaliate, stating that they are “doing good for the community”, or “riding for a benefit”, but if you ask them to show you any law that permits this, they will come up dry. There are ways of having processions done properly if you need to block traffic – usually by contacting the city you are in, so they can offer police assistance and/or issuing permits for this procession, but they obviously don’t feel they are obligated to follow the law when they can wave the “benefit flag” in our faces as they ride off into the distance, laughing all the way.
Yes……..the one we witnessed……….the blockers were laughing it up as their buddies cruised through the intersection. Even other bikers have stated that they do not do this. See this link:
Heck……..read the rest of the page. You will see many differing viewpoints on this, and of course, there is no general consensus on this topic, and probably never will be. You have bikers who state they need to do this for everyone to stay together for safety, and you have the motorists who state that everyone needs to follow the same laws, regardless of their mode of transportation.
So………we’re left with a choice………..either live with it and let them proceed as if nothing is wrong, or assert your rights and get into a conflict. The latter will probably end up with retaliation from the procession though, because they feel they are in the right, even though by law, they are in the wrong.
Unless you show me an actual WRITTEN LAW stating these processions are allowed, then I’m sorry but……you are wrong – just wrong.
