There are times nowadays when having things quiet can be a good thing. I think I attribute this mainly to the fact that we fill our lives with noise on a daily basis, and sometimes it gets to concert volumes or worse, and it’s not always a pleasant noise to be around. Some people prefer to have music going all of the time – or the TV, but sometimes it’s just best to let your mind rest and your thoughts empty out and give your brain a true chance to dream something new.
I had a chance tonight to do something I’ve not done in a very long time – just sit outside in the night air and listen to the sounds around me. I heard a car go down the street every once in a while, but for the most part, it was the faint sound of the sprinklers or the crickets chirping. I found this actually quite soothing! I guess I haven’t done that in a very long time, because it felt fresh and new again. Sure the grass was a bit wet, but there was a nice tree to lean up against, so it was a very nice thing indeed to do. I also sometimes go for walks at night, which I find peaceful, mainly because there are far fewer people around at night than during the day – of course, it’s not as hot either. This summer has not been kind, as it’s been in the 90’s for most of the time – one more reason why I prefer the nighttime.
If it’s been a while since you had a good dream, try this……..when you lay down, turn off everything that makes noise except perhaps the fans and/or the AC unit. If you hear someone else’s sounds, then your mind doesn’t have as much of a chance to make it’s own reality, so give it a try sometime………..maybe even on a night after you come back in after sitting under a tree listening to the sounds around you.
